Religions of the World:Hinduism : 47 minutes

This video is part of the Religions of the World series. You do not have to see the other videos for this one to make sense. Most of the footage is shot in India, but the interviews with authorities are primarily here in the US.

This film is more historical than philosophical with the authorities helping the viewer to understand the significance of the historical. A couple of the authorities are an associate professor, Dr. Deepak Sarma, from Vanderbilt University and Arun Gandhi, from the MK Gandhi Institute for Non-violence. The video is not inundated with the interviews with the authorities. Primarily, you will hear Ben Kingsley explaining about the history of Hinduism with the occasional clarification from the authority.

This is not a film to watch as an introduction to Hinduism. It is best to be familiar with some of the key terms and figures before viewing. Also, I found that my pronunciation of some terms was almost completely different from the narrator. This did lead to some confused moments, but nothing that would detract from the video. My students and I were all glad we had read a bit about Hinduism before watching the video.

I would recommend this video for educators and students wanting to understand a bit more about Hinduism.

The Hindu faith, practiced by millions of people in South Asia, boasts a long history and a rich epic literature. Hinduism describes the ancient lore and practices of this religion, and the challenges faced by Hindus in a modern, fast-changing world.«
